I am Richard Freiberg. Today we will be addressing 4 Cybersecurity Questions Boards Can’t Afford To Ignore in part 2 of a 4 part series.

As board of directors head into their quarterly meetings, cybersecurity MUST be top of the agenda.

The reasons behind the recent proliferation in cyberattacks are ransomware attacks and bot attacks disrupting important systems threatening the continued existence and viability of businesses (including critical infrastructure) of all sizes and across all verticals which cost the global economies trillions of dollars.

Why is this becoming a board-related issue? Not only do these attacks have real financial and reputational risk to the business which the board is responsible for overseeing as part of its fiduciary duties to the organization, but government regulatory bodies like the SEC are increasingly putting the onus on boards to increase reporting and implement stronger corporate governance practices.

  1. How are we educating our teams on cybersecurity?

What’s the factor most likely to cause a breach within any organization? People. We are all aware or should be that almost 90% of breaches are tied to human error whether clicking on a phishing link in their email, texts or phone calls. Implementing cyber education protocols across the organization helps close this gap and enable employees to make smart decisions to protect the company from attack.

The other piece of education to consider is whether the board itself is knowledgeable enough about cybersecurity to make informed decisions about risk. Boards should take an honest look at their own understanding of cyber risk, the current threat landscape and new technology areas to decide if they should pursue additional education. There are many ways to do this. First, the CISO can help set up the board with any of the many cybersecurity education platforms or online classes available today. The CISO can also offer their own education on current threats that are relevant to the organization or its industry.
