Mutant models are too insane for one release, so we’re getting them in two phases and the level of detail is “absolutely bonkers.”
On Monday, Bored Ape Yacht Club member VeraTheApe released the latest episode of her Vera The Intern podcast, featuring Yuga Labs Co-Founder Garga.
In the episode, Vera asked Garga about the Mutant Ape 3D models. Garga explained that the models were so detailed and complex that they had to be released in two phases.
The first phase will be a collaboration with BAYC member Rida’s ApeCoin DAO-funded DashBo platform. Here, community members will be able to model their Mutants and create user-generated content to flood the timeline. According to Garga, these models should be dropping “soon.”
The second phase will feature the official Yuga Labs 3D models for Otherside. These fully metaverse-ready models will launch after Yuga Labs introduces the first iteration of the persistent Otherside later this summer.
“The final Otherside compatible, Yuga 3D Mutant models, we are a little bit off on still,” Garga said. “Because we have been spending a lot of energy on making that June date for the persistent state. So, Mutants will be a bit after that. It won’t be before June for the Yuga ones, but the DashBo should be soon.”
During the interview, Garga also discussed the technical challenges of creating 3D models for Otherside, explaining how each avatar’s traits are generated layer by layer to optimize pixel use in Otherside’s mass-concurrent metaverse, which has hosted over 1,300 people in one space.
“Its a lot more technical,” Garga said.” “People’s 3D modeled Apes and Mutants are generated trait by trait atop one another. Its a lot more technical and it requires a level of precision and artistry in how we make our 3D models.”
As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, Garga teased the metaverse-ready Mutant 3D models back in May 2024. At the time, he shared just how much effort goes into creating these models.
“There’s an insane amount of work that gets put in to these things from the yuga side before the vendor touches stuff,” Garga said at the time. “Like decks with absurdly specific specs and stuff about every single trait etc. it’s SO hard to get 60+ artists to all row in the same direction.”
The Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow the development of Yuga Labs’ 3D models and will let you know when DashBo files are available and when more information on the Otherside 3D models is released. Stay tuned for updates!
