Yuga Labs CEO Garga aims to make this month’s Otherside Project Dragon episode one for the record books as he and the team open the metaverse to everyone in an attempt to break the world record for the most players in an online first-person shooter (FPS) battle!
On Wednesday, Yuga Labs announced that Apes, Meebs, Voyagers, and anyone else from the swamp, the $Ape ecosystem, and beyond were invited to join this month’s Project Dragon on January 31st.
“Join us next week for Project Dragon as we battle it out in the Swamp,” Yuga Labs tweeted from its Otherside account. “January 31 9pm ET .We’re going to attempt to break the world for the most players in an online FPS battle at once. No NFT needed to join.”
“For this month’s dragon, I want to token-gate the first ~15 min ish while players flow in, and then let it rip so we can beat this world record of 1530 users,” Garga said in an impromptu Q&A in Discord today. “I want to break a world for the most people online in an FPS shooter. Hard record to break – the world record of 1500 is there for a reason. Having some streamers showing it off and being able to drop links to their followers to join them will be special imo.”
Currently, PlanetSide 2 holds the world record for most players in a single online first-person shooter with 1530 players, according to Wikipedia.
Breaking this record has been a priority for Garga for weeks. As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, he shared this goal during a recent episode of Vera The Intern podcast, hosted by VeraTheApe.
“I think one of the things that people don’t get necessarily is that Otherside runs on M Squared and has the ability for mass concurrent,” he said. “The first Project Dragon we had 1300 people in one game in one shard all playing together. The world record is like 1,500 people for a shard, we are going to try and break that record pretty soon here.”
As the Bored Ape Gazette previously reported, Project Dragon is Yuga Labs’ monthly gaming event that plays like Fortnite mixed with Call of Duty’s Domination mode, where Apes, Meebits, Kodas, and Voyager Robots ass-blast their way through the swamp to take over checkpoints.
Bored Ape Gazette will continue to follow this month’s Project Dragon event and provide wartime coverage from the swamp on January 31st. Stay tuned for updates!
