The Yugaverse will be summering in the swamps, vacationing at the Nexus, and doing business in Meetropolis later this year after Yuga Labs CEO Garga announced that the first version of the company’s persistent metaverse will launch this June.
Things were anything but boring around the Bored Ape Yacht Club on Wednesday after Garga entered the Otherside Discord chat and announced that an always-on version of Otherside, complete with a usable Otherside Development Kit (ODK), AI integrations, and more, is coming soon!
“Focus right now is on driving access and utility for Otherdeeds more broadly, Garga explained when fielding a question about Otherside resources and artifacts. “We need that to make sure we have a strong base, and get us set up for persistent Otherside, which we plan for ~June of this year. Persistent Otherside does NOT mean we are done, it’s just a super important milestone. It means always-on world, strong ODK to allow Unreal-capable builders to create awesome shit (and have access to all the Otherside biomes to do that), and some ODK experiences that we’re proud of that show the capabilities of the platform. And that include some stuff we’re really excited about on the AI front. It also means the several key islands (Nexus, Swamp, Meetropolis to start) are up 24/7, which we expect people to congregate. Once we’re persistent and have the ODK in strong shape, then the next part of the roadmap revolves around our plans for resources and artifacts.”
After this announcement, Garga revealed that he and Yuga Labs plan to release a major trailer, reminiscent of their “Before Curtis” teaser from September 2022, to showcase the persistent world!
“I think we go big with something else like this around the time of persistence,” he said. “That’s when we want to get really loud again.”
At this time, specific details about what Garga and the Yuga Labs team have planned for the persistent Otherside remain unclear. However, based on recent Otherside events, it’s likely to include poker and Bubble Hangout Spaces.
Additionally, Yuga Labs granted early access to the metaverse’s ODK to at least 17 community members in July 2024. These members have presumably been building ODK experiences for Otherside since then.
Last week, Garga took to social media to announce plans to hire an Unreal Engine development team in South Korea to create a new Otherside experience. He also teased a ODK experiences in collaboration with BAYC member CryptoVonDoom and his Command Line team, who received access to the ODK last year.
